After the so-so High And Mighty album and the departure of David Byron and
John Wetton, Uriah Heep had a lot to live up to. With the addition of ex- Lucifer’s
Friend vocalist John Lawton on board the band produced one their best albums with
Firefly.
Lawton’s vocal style fits the band’s sound perfectly. Uriah Heep were always more than
your average hard rock band and Firefly shows they still had progressive
tendencies as evident on the opening cut The Hanging Tree and the title track
with it’s atmospheric keyboard intro and dream-like lyrics. The band could still rock too as
on Rollin’ On which will remind some of 70’s Whitesnake. The bonus
tracks on the CD reissue are standard Uriah Heep fare, A Far Better Way being the
best of the lot with a more progressive/ pomp sound with some cool synth that kicks into
a full blown rock track. It’s actually surprising this was left off the album.
The last I heard of John Lawton was a Lucifer’s Friend reunion CD in the early
90’s called Sumo Grip. This was an AOR disc essentially, crossing Bad
Company with Foreigner. Good stuff and worth checking out if you can
handle this sound or even find a copy these days....
