Nearly two years after their excellent album Big City Awakes, Spanish jazz/fusion band On The Raw are back with Climbing The Air. Those of you (like me) that really appreciated the first record will certainly not be disappointed with this new one.
Climbing The Air shows a band that is progressing. Their music (in my humble opinion) seems even more focused than on their first recording, so the album sounds more cohesive. Yet again, the musicians display their high level of skill on all the tracks, but never to the point of showmanship. What makes Climbing The Air a superior album to most in the jazz/fusion genre is the quality of the writing. I also appreciate the presence of wind instruments, that give the music a 70's feel.
Fans of bands like Snarky Puppy, Maneige and jazz/fusion in general should really get their hands on this album. On The Raw are on the top of their field... and still moving forward.
