V2 is a Dutch band that has been active since the mid 90's. Showdown, just out, is their third album and it is my first encounter with this very good melodic heavy Prog band.

Even though they are Dutch, in more than a few ways V2 makes me think of two very popular German bands : Sylvan and Poor Genetic Material.

I first compare V2 to Sylvan because they offer a similar mix of heavy, melodic, (sometimes aggressive) Prog that could interest music fans ranging from Marillion to Metallica. On a couple of songs they come near to doing a power ballad and in these instances Poor Genetic Material comes to my mind, in good part because lead singer Ernst Honingman's voice can be pretty close to the excellent Philip Grifiths'.

V2 do not reinvent anything, but they manage to offer us well written and composed songs that do introduce some fresh ideas. With some A+ performances by the musicians, Showdown deserves to please a great number of fans.

Personnally I think that Showdown by V2 is one of the best albums to recently come out in the melodic heavy Prog genre.
