Admittedly I am not a Dream Theater fan, but there is no denying Rudess is one
of the finest keyboard players in the progressive scene today. His solo albums have been
rather hit or miss for me, although this is certainly his best.
With Listen we have lush and at times very romantic keyboard forays reminding me
very much of Yanni and his excellent major label debut Keys To
Imagination with plenty of drama and atmosphere which can be quite powerful.
The only downside of the album is the vocals. Rudess is not the best and at times
the female background vocals are too much in the ‘Soul’ vein bringing the music closer to
a heavily synthesized version of Toto or some Gary Wright, which is not a bad thing- just out of place with the rest of the material. A nice disc overall, and if you are going to buy just one Rudess solo, Listen should be it.
