Kosmos is a 6 piece group from Finland. Their music is in the psyche-prog-folk vein and has Breton influences.Instruments used are violin, acc.guitars, drums, organ, synths, mellotrons, bassoon, congas, recorder and the mysterious theremin.
Polku is their second album (they released Tarinoita voimasta in 2004).
The fragile female vocals contributes to a nice dreamy, psychedelic 70's feel ; a feeling of the deep, dark woods of Finland.
Track by track:
- Polku 1 (The Path 1) 1:10
- the shortest track on the album serves as a nice starter of what to come.
- Vieras Kieli (A Foreign Tongue) 6:25
- a very charming, quiet song with a Breton Malicorne/Alain Stivell-like feeling. Nice female vocals by Päivi Kylmänen.
- Kesa (Summer) 3:24
- It's hard not to be fascinated by the fragile voice of Päivi. Kate & Anna McGarrigle comes to mind here. The sound of the recorder by guestp layer Pauliina Isomäki gives a certain Incredible String Band feeling. Good el.guitar passages by IsmoVirta.
- Omini's Dakakos 8:05
- The lush mellotron sound of Ismo recalls a quieter Änglagard. Nice Grapelli-like violin by guest player Jukka Aaltonen. Päivi's voice may also recall Marisa Nadler.
- Lahja vai Kirous (A Gift or a Curse) 4:07
- another nice track not unlike track 2 on the album.
- Eksyin (I Got Lost) 4:24
-The sound of the mellotron combined with tasteful classical guitar and recorder playing by Pauliina, gives a certain feeling of getting lost on a path (in Finnish 'Path' is 'Polku') in the middle of nowhere;maybe in the deep forests of Finland.
- Ouija 4:22
- Another good, mysterious track. Mellotron and classical guitar is backing the whispering voice of Päivi.
- Nuoruus (My Youth) 4:22
- A song about a young dreamer who has problems finding himself. Again mellotron is one of the group's main instruments. This great instrument is not used too much in folk music, however, proves here that it really adds a tasteful flavor.
- Polku II (The Path 2) 1:51
- A short track ends the album which totally clocks in at 38:25
A very good second release from
Kosmos. If you are open for the folkier side of prog, This is highly recommended ! 8/10
