I have always felt that Led Zeppelin IV was a transition album for the band. It contained a number of tracks in the blues/rolk/folk style of their previous three albums, but also had "Stairway to Heaven", definitively a prog rock piece if I ever heard one.

Houses of the Holy goes much further than it's predecessor in the Led Zeppelin progression (pun intended). On this album, three tracks, The Song Remains the Same, The Rain Song and No Quarter are clearly progressive rock (and great tracks I may add). The remaning four explore the other genres Zeppelin had tried in previous efforts, (and all are quite good) but the mood was set by the "big three" that clock at more than half the duration of the record.

In my opinion Houses of the Holy was their most ambitious and accomplished album to date. They were to surpass that in their next effort...
