I ‘m not a big fan of live albums although there have been a few that have stood out for
me, including UFO’s Stranger’s In The Night, Hawkwind’s
Space Ritual and Thin Lizzy’s monster Live And Dangerous, but
overall, most fail to capture a bands essence or even the power of live performance. As a
Kansas fan I bought this double LP almost immediately after it’s release yet I always felt it
to be somewhat lackluster. Of course the musicianship and material is impeccable, yet
much of this is too close to the original album versions which I expect in this context,
considering Kansas were playing to huge mainstream crowds in eight to ten thousand seat
Arenas at the time of these recordings. Hard to fault the band for playing for the people,
but I just wished for more from this set.
Compounding the problem is the CBS CD reissue tragically omitting Closet
Chronicles- one of the band’s best works. Let’s hope Two For The Show gets
the reissue upgrade it deserves. While not one of the great live albums in history, it’s a fine
work from one of America’s best.
