Formed in Italy in the autumn of 1977, Saint Tropez (frequently stylized as St. Tropez) operated as a highly ambitious, synthesizer-driven space rock ensemble. The project was masterminded by Italian progressive rock veteran Ciro Perrino, who handled a massive array of analog synthesizers (including EMS Synthi AKS, Mini Moog, and ARP 2600), alongside tuned percussion, drums, and vocals. The shifting, expansive studio lineup included guitarist and bassist Alex Magazzino, the ethereal "space vocals" of Lady Mantide, and returning collaborators from Perrino's past, such as bassist Giorgio Battaglia.

Stepping entirely away from the delicate, pastoral symphonic rock of Perrino's earlier bands, Saint Tropez fully embraced the cosmic, electronic aesthetics of the Canterbury and space rock scenes. Their compositions are characterized by hypnotic, cyclical rhythms, sweeping synthesizer glissandos, and extended improvisational jamming that draws heavy comparisons to the trilogy-era work of Gong and the solo output of Steve Hillage. 

Following the dissolution of the highly regarded symphonic group Celeste (and his earlier work in the proto-prog band Il Sistema), Ciro Perrino established Saint Tropez to explore heavier electronic textures. The project existed as a studio entity until early 1979, at which point the core trio of Perrino, Magazzino, and Lady Mantide evolved directly into the instrumental electronic ensemble La Compagnia Digitale.
