Porcupine Tree started as a solo project of Steven Wilson who also performs with No-Man, Bass Communion, Blackfield and IEM.
In 1987. Wison made up a imaginary band which he called Porcupine Tree although he in fact was doing all the work. The first two tapes of this 'band' were well received by the underground record label Delerium and live performances were called for.
In 1993 Porcupine Tree started tourning with Richard Barbieri (ex-Japan, No-Man), Chris Maitland (Blackfield)and Colin Edwin (Ex-Wise-Heads, No-Man, O.R.k.). Initally they were guest members but over time Porcupine Tree evolved into a full band with a stable line-up.
In 2002 Chris Maitland left the band for personal reasons. A longtime friend of the group members, Gavin Harrison (Blackfield, King Crimson), became the new drummer when the band made the album In Absentia.
