Woodlands, the second cd I have heard from this Finnish ensemble, shows the band furthur developing the sounds and nuances I recall from their debut self-titled recording. The band suggests many influences from jazz, fusion and progressive rock as their main sources for musical direction. And from what I have heard from them, their hearts are predominantly in the jazz/fusion world, yet without the rock tag that usually gets included with that. Piano, Sax, and Trumpet create much of the melodious accompaniment, with some minor electronic instrument inclusions from the synths and guitars, as well as wind instruments. This can be pretty relaxing music at times, yet not so much because of the pace of the music, but in tonal quality. There are moments when the band gets a bit more out of character, and they are golden. They can lull you to a quiet place and then surprise you with some nice electric guitar, or on the song - Dance of the Mistress, they are going between a Celtic sounding flute and accordian, to a more aggressive fusion attack, nice contrast to say the least.
Mist Season is far more jazz than progressive music, yet they are not straight improv either, the music has direction and structure, and it shows a subtle progressivity to it, having the sax and trumpets working together gives them a unique feel, as they are often used as a combination for melodic themes, at times reminding me of the obscure 70's fusion band Matrix. For the most part, they again stay in a mellower mood throughout this cd, giving the music the same contemplative mood that I was familiar with from the debut cd. These guys are seasoned professionals as musicians, and play the brand of music that is sincere to their shared influences. The integrations of more ethno musics is something of a difference that I am hearing on this release. As well as the many guest musicians, this cd has proven to be a furthur developement in overall sound for Mist Season.
This is a band that would greatly appeal to the fans of more laid back sound fusion, ala Pat Metheny, Lee Ritenour, Fourplay, Metro, The Yellowjackets, Spiro Gyra, etc.. And I again, as mention in my prior review of this band, this is not smooth jazz, but a smoother version of jazz fusion. And is a rewarding listen on those quiet mornings while drinking a good cup of coffee, or those late evenings in front of the fire.
