Reviews

review by: MarcLet me start by saying that Surface Serene is a very good Progressive Rock album. Their music is not overly complex even though in all the songs you get interesting time changes, nice instruments and vocal interaction and often great soloing (synth and/or guitar). In fact most of the songs start in a straightforward hard rock format but always (and sometimes quickly) evolve in progressive territories. Don't expect anything reminding you of Genesis or ELP or any other of the "big six" of the seventies. If I were to pick a well known band somewhat close to what Little Atlas does, I would go with Spock's Beard, in there Beware of Darkness period. I can think of two other bands that stylisticly are not far from Little Atlas: Under The Sun and The Underground Railroad. I must emphasise that these comparaisons are made only to help the reader have an idea of the style of music to expect from this cd. In no way is Little Atlas derivative of any of the bands previously listed

Steve Katsikas is the band's lead singer, keyboard player and tackles other instruments. He has a nice voice and uses it well. When he pushes his voice a bit I'm hearing a bit of Geddy Lee, but I guess like he would sound after a night out in smoke filled bars. As a keyboard player Katsikas is very good, his soloing being in the same league as Wakeman or Nolan to name a few. Joanna Katsiskas has backing vocals duties and I would like to hear more of her. Diego Pocovi's drums and Rik Bigai bass complement the music in grand fashion. Finally, Roy Strattman's guitar playing (specially is soloing) puts the emphasis more on emotion than on speed. Think of Andy Latimer or Roine Stolt for references.

In conclusion, Surface Serene is a cd that will often find it's way to my player. Highly recommended.
