Reviews

review by: MJBradyIt seems that I could write the same review for every Freak Kitchen cd, but that may incline the reader to believe they are a redundant band making the same cd over and over, which they are not. And I feel that would be a grave injustice to a band that is making some incredibly addictive music.

Oddly enough, this is the bands self-titled cd, and it is not their first release, something you'd expect from most bands. The point could be argued that the band is not progressive, in that they are not one to use exotic time changes, or write long, epical concept albums. On the contrary, FK writes many short songs, uses fairly common time signatures, and can be deemed hard rock music at most times. But the underlying themes that go along with these commonalities make them highly unique, let me try to explain without sounding like I am apologizing for the band, or trying to make them into something they are not.

The band has a lot in common stylistically with bands like:Max Webster, King's X, Galactic Cowboys, Mr. Bungle and a few others. Now these are some very eccentric bands to say the least, and that is a fitting word to describe the bands identity. In an attempt to break down the details of the band I have to start with the bands guitarist, Mattias IA Eklund, who surely should be on every guitar fans list of players to hear, he is a phenom on the instrument, and writes most of the bands material, yet FK as a band is not a guitar centric band in any heroic fashion. He writes great songs, very catchy, and will unlease his freak guitar solos on occasion, never dominating the music in any way, but always leaves you wanting for more when you hear his unique and gifted abilities, I would say he sounds like a mutation of Steve Vai, Zappa & Ty Tabor.

Lyrically the band dwells in the world of sarcastic humor, often with pretty radical statements and song titles. This would be something that would have made Zappa proud, and this remains something that makes the band so original. It's funny how they are able to take such inane lyrics and create very serious vocal harmonies and melodic friendlyness with them. There was a time when music like this could have a home on FM Radio, but the restrictive nature of the lyrics wouldn't have allowed it.

Yes this is more of the same for Freak Kitchen, but it is more of the same good stuff they have carved a niche for, an undoubtedly overlooked band that needs to be heard by more folks out there,
