Reviews

review by: MJBradyFor those that like their music hard rocking, with some angst driven satirical lyrics, and don't mind vicious guitar playing and smart melodic hooks, you would do well to discover this band, after having heard 4 cds by this band I am convinced that they don't have a bad one to date.

This is a band that will finds it's audience with fans of bands like King's X, Galactic Cowboys, Faith No More. Smart and intelligent compostions that are never boring or uninteresting, and with the guitar antics of Mattias IA Eklund, their are always some new surprises in every song. He is a guitarist of the most unconventional talents, his rhythm style is aggressive as well as articulate, and provides the main instrumental voice in the band, yet it is his soloing that really sets him apart from the slew of shredheads out there. His sound is closest in style to perhaps Steve Vai in that he radically reinvents riffs and licks with a highly personal twist.

But to call this a guitar-centric band would be a misnomer, Freak Kitchen is a band to be sure, and they have a great thing going on here, yes the music does have a distinctly similar feel and formula from song to song, but like the bands used for comparison in this review, they give you more of what it is you like aobut their particular, if not peculiar sound. Spanking Hour is every bit as good as any other FK cd and well worth the trouble in finding.
