review by: EricShamefully, I have not picked up the recent reissue of Going for The One with bonus tracks, so this will be a review of the album in it’s original form.
Going For The One while not groundbreaking compared to the groups earlier work, is one of their most accessible releases and a personal favorite. In fact I probably have listened to this album more than any other in the band’s catalog and if I were to pick one Yes album to take to a deserted island, Going For The One would be my choice.
Some have called Going For The One the first ‘Neo progressive’ album. Interesting, but I am inclined to disagree with this as Neo progressive combined traditional progressive with a new wave/ punk aesthetic. Hard to imagine in 1977, punk would have had that much of an influence so soon, if at all on a band of Yes’ stature. Perhaps the shorter song style offered an answer to changing American radio formats with Boston, Peter Frampton, Fleetwood Mac and The Eagles dominating the airwaves, far removed from the side long suites of Close To The Edge. Or, perhaps the band wanted to try something new?
There are three tracks that really stand out for me here. Wondrous Stories is a whimsical piece of art that deserves it’s place as one of the better Yes tracks. Turn Of The Century is equally as magical and grand with beautiful and soaring vocals from Anderson offset by Steve Howe’s stunning acoustic guitar work and Parallels with it’s beautiful Church organ, and Chris Squire’s rumbling bass lines.
This would be the last Yes album I would enjoy from start to finish. Tormato and Drama had their moments, but in the early 80’s Yes changed dramatcally with 90125 with mixed results. Going For The One is a beautiful album and receives my highest recommendation.
