Reviews

review by: MJBradyExempt is the second cd by this duo of guitar virtuosos Brett Garsed & TJ Helmerich. After the highly acclaimed Quid Pro Quo, which was also on the now defunct Legato records label, Exempt sets out to start up where Quid Pro Quo leaves off, and this cd doesn't disappoint, the extraordinary songwriting skills are here once again, something that is largely missing on the majority of solo guitarists cds. But that is the beauty of this combination, both are players of the highest caliber, yet it's their understanding of compositional attention that creates the magic if the music. This cd sees the return of drummer Bobby Rock, who is a very underrated player, and he gets his spots to shine here, and takes full advantage, the bass duties are being done by the magic of Tribal Tech's own Gary Willis, which for those who know, has the gift of touch, never playing in an oridnary way, he is a gifted bassist that colors everything he plays on. As was the case on QPQ, the cd has a varied approach to the music contained, with players of this magnitude, the listener gets the benefits of hearing the many facets of their abilities. This is not a strictly fusion affair, both guitarists enjoy playing in many various moods, genres, and substyles. This may be a frustrating thing for the hard core fusion heads, but trust me when I mention, whatever these guys are playing, they do it masterfully, so listening with open ears, and mind is a necessity. They do manage to squeeze in a couple vocals tunes just as they did on QPQ, and although they are not the strongest songs on this cd, they are tolerable, and Helmerich does have a very good voice.
