Reviews

review by: MJBradyFreak Kitchens' debut started things off with more than a little buzz for the band being dubbed "The best debut album a Swedish band has produced in both this and the last decade. " And putting the band into the market for fans of original and unique hard rock. It's easy to go through the bands' discography and hear how the band stays true to their own inventions. Not one to rely on conventional or traditional ideas, bandleader, vocalist and guitarist exceptionale - Mattias IA Eklundh has always been able to create his own personal setting for which not only to convey his thoughts through the lyrical statements of the band, but also to show his own style on the guitar, for which he has now gotten the recognition he is deserving of.

Appetizer surely is the bands' first output, yet not the worst, the truth is, this band has no worst music, every cd, every song, and every tidbit of what has come from these zany Swedes is not of the kind that is used to fill vacant space on cds. Each song is it's own adventure into the mind of the chef's that make up this Freak Kitchen thing. Heavy band for sure, not sheer metal, but at times quite close, not true progressive in the familiar sense, but odd and unique enough to make them fit somewhere at this site for whatever reason. Not a conventional hard rock band either, as they are too clever and sophisticated for that.

Eklundh's vocals scream of cynicism, insightful satire, contemporary political and social questioning, and defiance and rebellion towards many standardly accepted things, but all done tastefully with irony being the theme through most songs, the lyrics are smart and challenging, and somehow each song manages to have a humorous twist that keeps the 'real' perspective on the messages. Eklundh the guitarist is something of an anomaly, it seems that every time he plays a solo in each of the songs, he is making a statement that he has been visiting other planets to get his inspiration. As I always hear him play something on the guitar that makes me wonder " what was that", or " now how did he do that one?", and on and on he goes, keeping you entranced with his otherworldly skills and unearthly genius.

So there seems to be something for everyone with this band, lot's of talent on display here, but remembering that this is a band, one will definitly find that what they really do best is write sticky songs, sticky in that you are going to have them following you around days after becoming familiar with them. So beware!
