Reviews

review by: Valerio Usually i skip albums which are labelled as neo-sympho prog but this time i can't!! Life Line Project "Distorted Memories" needs some attention, even from a weird listener like me. Erik De Beer's band and crew started about 25 years ago and im finally here to tell you my thoughts on this "classic"! Yes, the word to use is "classic" with all the best meanings you focus in mind right now reading it. There are facts that make this absolutely enjoyable and the percentage of progressive symphonic rock here is 99,9%. The Vintage collection of instruments used, in particular keyboards, just throw you into a back-in-the-days situation when moogs and electric pianos were on top of the world! But Erik is not only a keyboardist, he is a polyinstrumentalist with esponential capacity and knowledge of guitars/mandolins. Sound is in the middle of ancient progrock and a sort of medieval/folk oriented landscape, it's absolutely a surprise and, well, im sure the reason is about the professionality of the musicians but Erik chose almost only females for his band!! Jokes a part, an album full of personality and originality even if may sound a "classic clone" of never forgotten bands, so let's say there is a sort of respect of what were the glorious 70s for progressiverock music. Flute/Violin/oboe and singing makes this a must for the "real" symphonic prog lovers and maybe don't mix that far NEO influence a la Marillon with this please!! Be kind to music!! It recalls me my teenage period i really don't know why, probably because i was still not distorted by avantgarde and rock in opposition and his feeling is great for me, cutting out Yes or ELP clones Life Line Project creates a definetively straight prog feeling into the listener. Starting tune just throws your head back on your headrest and make you hold yourself to armrests like the best symphonic tune in your top5 desert island albums!! what an Intro! 40 seconds of pure energy. "Distorted Memories" is the revisitation of 20 years music for Life Line, in fact almost all tracks have a predecessor in their albums. Life Line Suite 2010 is the headline tune of Erik on which he works since his beginnings probably rearranging it everytime during the years, other tunes like Acoustic Spring were in Zoundworks back even more far in 1984, bonus track is based on a Dutch folksong "hop Marjannke" underlining the love of De Beer for his cultural roots. In conclusion i must say that The target is reached, "Distorted Memories" fits perfectly in the prog-head's collection! Music spaces from romantic landscape to more aggressive and farly dissonant situations, unexpected tempo variations and incredibly tight melodies. Recording without extra editing during and after the recording makes this album, first of all rough and sometimes cold, but also underlines the capacity of the musicians involved and great professionality. Probably this means auto-producing! I want that people out there understand that bands/musicians like this needs support from us because we need them!
