Reviews

review by: Marc

With their new album Spirit, British Neo Prog band Solstice celebrate their 30th anniversary. It's true that the band has changed personnel quite a lot, guitar player Andy Glass being the only founder of the band still with Solstice. In that they follow the same path as the band that perhaps inspired Solstice the most : Camel. Like Andy Latimer's band, Solstice is very much the product of Andy Glass.

Spirit is pretty much a guitar based album of symphonic melodic progressive rock very much in the tradition of Camel or some of Steve Hackett's work. The tracks do feature lead vocals by Emma Brown, that has a nice but not very powerfull voice. Also, Jenny Newman on violin gives the music a Folky flavour at times. I should also add that Pete Hemsley's drumming is very much in evidence on Spirit which, I must admit, sometimes was a bit of a large dose for my taste.

Spirit by Solstice is a nice album of symphonic melodic progressive rock is the tradition of 70's British bands. If you are into that genre check this album out.
