Reviews

review by: MJBradyJust as the year 2006 comes to a close, one does not expect to hear any new surprises, yet time and time again it never fails, an artist comes from out of nearly no where to make a solid impression on me. And this year, in December of 2006, I received a DVD from the band Toxic Smile, whom I have grown quite fond of, the DVD is reviewed here at Proggnosis btw. But along with the DVD, I get the unexpected cd along with it, from the keyboardist in the band - Marek Arnold. He worked on a project band during 2006 with many German artists, mostly from varied backgrounds, and not so well known around the rest of the world. The projectband was named Seven Steps To The Green Door, and consists of some incredible musicians, and as mentioned, each has a different background, yet as a band, the results of this determined effort, is a cd that is nothing but a pleasure to the aural senses to listen to. I honestly didn't know what to expect upon first listen, but it turned out to be one of the most refreshing, original, and tastefully created musical creations I have had the pleasure of hearing this year.

This band has no limits, boundaries, or expectations from which they draw their creative juices. It's everything inclusive, and whatever comes out of their collective imaginations, becomes what makes the project what it is. They have jazz, fusion, hip hop, progrock, poprock, shred, and more all included in their sound, so expect the unexpected. Marek is well represented as a keyboarder and sax player, his sax work reminds me of ex-Mahavishnu player - Bill Evans, truely expressive and tasteful, also the guitar playing of Andreas “Eddy” Gemeinhardt is excellent, this band seems able to transcend any musical genre with a flare for innovation and musicality, the kind that comes from the very best talent, which is quite apparent with this ensemble. One thing however to mention, is that the band is largely vocal oriented, and with some excellent singing, somewhat reminding me of Enchant's - Ted Leonard at times, but again, this band doesn't just stay in any set musical routine, as they playfully indulge in so many different styles with the greatest of ease.

This is one of those cds I feel fortunate and honored to have been turned on to, just by virtue of reviewing music, an artist was kind enough to share his efforts with me, and to my surprise, or perhaps given Marek's work with Toxic Smile, I am not so surprised. While Toxic Smile is a great band, and one I hope more readers and progressive fans discover, this effort is not to be missed, I understand that this cd probably is not readily available, but I do urge those interested to find some sound samples online and make your own judgements.
