Reviews

review by: NunoNo doubt music is a box of constant surprises, though we many times think that there is nothing left to explore and kind of sit back and enjoy the old times and listen to the bands that we did 20 years ago…
Then sometimes a new Band appearance really defies any sense of orientation and we are ready to conquer the world again! This is the feeling we get with this Andromeda´s debut. Yes, though we would not bet our money on it, these guys are really new in the business of Progressive Metal, and what a business they have here…
Extension of the wish is the response to the already settled American Progressive Metal, based on classical/symphonic arrangements and orchestrations, changing every of the mentioned rules and comes from Sweden…yes, the same country that have already grace us with Pain Of Salvation (no, this is not similar to POS).
One thing stands out from the first minute…we are dealing with a new, fresh approach to the genre. Though the vocal work seem familiar in this style, the musicality is somehow different and compels us to hear the album in a breath.
One thing is absolutely outstanding in this album…the guitar work from Johan Reinholdz. Him alone could bear the whole band on its shoulders, but in this case we have very good keyboards and rhythm section also.
After a less worked first track, Crescendo of Thoughts opens with a very virtuoso guitar work, well seconded by the keyboards. This is what is expected in the rest of the album. That guitar work sometimes seems to come out from something Anomaly or Spiral Architect would play, only in a different approach and different tone. This song is very intense and really opens the album (a feeling you just might not get in the first track).
In the deepest of waters is another amazing piece of excellent musicianship: intricate, innovative and refreshing. Before Lawrence Mackroy starts his singing , we have about 2 and a half minutes of constant guitar soloing that can really ablaze you. The mix of a melodious and calm interlude just before the guitar burst again in anger is brilliant.
Chameleon Carnival is an instrumental piece that could, on its own, prove the excellence of the musicians we are listening to. A very complex and progressive music, thou its done in furious pace. This track could be on the honour book of any virtuoso progressive metal band . Well, prepare to be almost 5 minutes without breathing
Star Shooter Supreme comes with a fast step. Velocity exceeds the speed of light and the vocals here are excellent (Rob Zombie have a match here). This is one of my favourites here, the back work of the rhythm guitar is amazing and Martin Hedin´s work on keyboards is better than ever.
Extension of the wish, the title track, shows the most melodious side of Andromeda, even if mixing calmness with furious guitar chops and soloing. As throughout the all album, Thomas Lejon is excellent on drums and again we have a different style in vocals (every single track is singed differently).
Arch Angel closes the album in style. The rhythm is absolutely grand and the band continues showing its skills with each member contributing at its best level.
In a whole, this is a monstrous album from a new arrived Band. I can only say this is a turnover and many bands will follow this… In the end, what you have is a great “fresh air wind” sweeping the prog metal scene and I will be looking forward to see whats to come next.
One final thought…if you like the more heavy yet inventive kind of prog, look no further…

review by: MJBradyYet another outstandingly talented progressive metal band from Sweden? From the land that has given us: Pain of Salvation, Mind's Eye, Mayadome, Opeth, Treasure Land, Wolverine, Majestic, A.C.T. and these are only the tip of an iceberg for progmetal, as many know of the legacy of progrock greats from this country, Andromeda comes as not just another band to be taken lightly, this band does it all, great talent abounds, monster chops, lot's of balls and chunk, and an unusual approach with singing that almost sounds a bit alternative. This is a cd worth checking out if you like bands such as: Dalis' Dilemma, Event, DreamTheater. They have a technical style, with lengthy instrumental breaks showing a high degree of musicianship, in fact being this is a debut production, this is very impressive, nothing freshmanlike here. All the band members are showcased for their respective talents, and it's a very nice chemistry between them, definetly on par with DreamTheater as far as virtuosity is concerned.
