review by: MJBradyMatt Williams heads the little known LNR records (Liquid Note Records, which specializes in guitar centered, instrumental music), it was his idea to come up with a compilation of songs by various artists' that were unique in that they were not merely displaying the virtues of each musician, but showing a complex and intellectual approach to compostional detail. What the end result is, is a 2 cd set of some of the most progressively influenced instrumental music around. Many of the featured musicians have solid reputations around various music circles, some not so well known, but deserving. That is the beauty of such a release as this. You get to sample and taste each musicians style of music, and trust me, if you do get this cd, you may be finding yourself shopping each individual's full length releases to compliment your music collections.

What Williams has done, is focused on songs that show both guitar centered virtuoustic abilities, but in the context of creative song writing, so this collection of songs is not your typical shredder release, but a nice reference for the more progressive minded musicians that are tackling instrumental music, and in need of getting heard by a sleeping audience that may be surprised that such music exists. I have had the pleasure to hear and review many of the artists' represented here on their respective full length cds. I also have thought of doing something similar to this, perhaps I can bounce some ideas back and forth with Williams for a second such Alchemists cd.

The Alchemists serves a few purposes for the prospective listener: One - is for discovery, as there are some outstanding musicians/composers featured on this release. Two - Pure musical enjoyment, two full cds of solid listening material. Three - Inspiration, As each of these songs represent a new level of writing and performance for the instrumental progressive/fusion musician.
