North Atlantic Oscillation is a relatively new band that has quite a buzz about it. Their latest (and second) album Fog Electric has been out for a few months now and I recently gave it a few spins.
Possibly because they are distributed by KScope, I am not much surprise to notice a strong Steven Wilson influence in their music. Firstly there are Sam Healy's lead vocals that do somewhat sound like SW's. Also, the music, with it's spacey moods, electronic fiddling, Beach Boys inspired harmonies and mostly shortish catchy songs does make me think of Mr. Wilson's poppier solo production or even Blackfield. This being said, the references are only for mood and sound, because all the tracks on Fog Electric are very original compositions and remind me of no other by any group or artist.
Fog Electric by North Atlantic Oscillation is a CD that can be highly recommended to those interested in the more modern side of Prog. It fits very well in the style of music that can still be considered as Prog, but with no direct links with seventies symphonic Prog Rock (and also Neo). I will certainly check out their first CD in a near futur, being quite impressed with this one.
