Reviews

review by: Valerio

Musica Ficta is a very interesting band from Israel discovered by the Italian label FADING Records, offshot of the mighty AltrOck.

Musica Ficta is just magic. Symphonic Progressive Rock of the finest on the market these days.

Sometimes it's here and the moment after it's there...it vanishes in your player and like a ghost appears behind your shoulders the moment after...it's like when at morning You don't really know if you are awaken or still dreaming...that's the Magic of Musica Ficta.

This said, it's not easy at all to describe their debut album "A child & a Well" because it has many faces and hided behind these faces there are many little faces and behind these little faces there are mini-little faces and undeterminable aspects which are difficult to examinate or just describe. What You need to know is that if You consider yourself a lover of the "classics" You need to listen to Musica Ficta.

I, usually, try to give You my emotions and feelings so I must admit that in my first listenings I wasn't captured by their sound, there are two particular reasons, the first is because I was so much focused on alternative sub-genres of the progrock world lately like RIO or Zeuhl that I completely missed the joy of listening to symphonic prog and, probably because I wasn't used to listen singing in hebrew, this is true.
"A child & a Well" is something you need to explore slowly and giving it all your soul and heart because that is what it gives back to you.

Music is melancholic, sometimes sad but it has an hided little face of happiness and hope especially in the second part of the recording. It has an energy taken from "old" masters, the influence of the masters of the English prog-rock scene is underlined also by the producer notes in the first page of the booklet.
Opposition of acoustic sections to electric ones reminds absolutely of Jethro Tull and you will be without doubts catpulted into those glorious times remembering that everything is filtered by high-skilled musicians coming from the classical, the jazz, the folk and the rock scenes of the new century.
Moments of Emersonian flavour and even breaks of jazz-rock makes "A Child & a Well" a full immersion in what is the music we enjoy and like.

Progression of keyboards+guitar with refined flute melodies on a solid rhytmic session are what a man needs sometimes, if you also add the lyrical mark of their singer: 2+2! Result is easy to calculate.

Influence...70s progrock...BUY-- BE HAPPY!

You won't mistake if you get this little gem because Musica Ficta is among those bands which work on an album for years so nothing is left by and everything is offered.

Udi Horev, the mastermind of the band, doesn't leave much space for imagination and nothing is left to improvisation, this is magistrally structured and balanced.
Focused on a serious matter the music of Musica Ficta fully mirrors the high-skill background of the musicians mixing classical with jazz discovering progressive rock showing unrepeatable sense of poise, accuracy, and taste.

Musica Ficta stimulates the "classic" progrock lover and also the "adventorous" one, once you are into the album you ll find short reprises of melodies you already heard in their tunes...this is something I absolutely love, I love to find an hided theme/melody represented, rearranged, played once electric and then acoustic, this is what I love of progrock music.

Couldn't be in another way that Udi Koomran mixed and mastered his brothers effort and the result, like always, is an awesome product of pure sound quality.
Conclusion: You ll thank me when You have "A Child & a Well" in your player!
