Reviews

review by: progdog

Peter Matuchniak is the driving force behind new band Gekko Project. He may not be known to the broad prog audience, has, however, he's been in two interesting UK Indie/neo bands in the early 80's: Janysium and Mach One.

"Electric Forest" is an promising debut showing Matuchniak's talents as an experienced guitarist. 7 out of the 10 tracks on the album are instrumentals. At times the music recalls Camel and especially the guitars of Andy Latimer. Even Steve Hackett comes to mind.
The keyboards by Vance Gloster contribute to a rich and fresh sound. Vocals on 3 tracks by drummer Alan Smith and Gloster. Bass on the album by Rick Meadows.

Track by Track:

  1. "Particle dance"- excellent guitars by Matuchniak. The rhythms reminds me of Carlos Santana.
  2. "Black hole" - Chosen as a single. Vocals by Alan Smith. Brit band Oasis comes to mind. Nice catchy pop song.
  3. "Cognitive dissonance" - Nice organ and synths by Vance Gloster.Matuchniak holds the song together by his high class guitar playing.
  4. "London vibe" - Gekko Project goes fusion on this 2 min.track.
  5. "Avatar Jones" -  A nice ballad with lots of progressive changes;vocals by Gloster. The song starts as a poprock ballad; turns after a while over in a more proglandscape.
  6. "Erdinger" - An ordinary uptempo instrumental ballad.
  7. "Martian sunrise" - A quiet instumental. Again good guitar playing.Phideaux's Johnny Unicorn comes to mind in Glover's synths.
  8. "State of siege" - Camel/Latimer's Snowgoose/Raindances comes to mind. - not a bad reference..
  9. "October skies" - The vocals reminds me of Cafe Jaques meets 10cc. Even City Boy comes to mind. Another nice poprock song.  In the middle of the song there is a change into Floydian landscape. Nice synths by Gloster.
  10. "Particle coda" - A short instrumental closes the album.

All over this is more art rock than prog. Nothing here is extraordinary. It has however many interesting moments and is absolutely worth a listen.
