Reviews

review by: MJBradyThe wave of progressive music from Poland continues to impress, this is yet another band that dabbles with the progressive metal realm, while providing as many moments of less crunchy music, shades of ambient, symphonic and hard rock are also present with Acute Mind, now this is not a new release as of the date of this review, as it was originally released in 2010, yet I am just hearing of this band recently.  So here I have now gotten to hear at least 6-7 newer bands from Poland in recent years, and nearly everyone of them is excellent, now add Acute Mind to the fold. Each of the bands that come to mind when I write of this Polish scene shares many similar qualities, yet none sounding alike.  First the production values and sound of the music is first rate, secondly, the musicianship is quite good also, along with that, the songwriting has quite the flare for setting the hooks in your ears, luring you back for repeated listens. Lastly, the bands have very talented singers, being that they are singing in English, there are little if any problems in understanding the annunciations due to accent issues, this can be problematic for bands that are not singing in their native language, yet no problems here.

Acute Mind gets heavy at times, yet keeps things moving by adding elements of cinema to their backdrop, not a band that relies on instrumental forays, epics, or bombast, they have a refined and modern sound, especially coming from the keyboard work of Dorota Turkiewicz, who adds some spellbinding sounddrops, and nice soloing. In trying to place them categorically next to more familiar bands with which to compare them to, they more closely resemble traditional progmetal bands then they do progrock bands, of course the band Terminal, also from Poland comes to mind, yet they are not a band most people have had the pleasure to hear.  Perhaps Riverside is another valid comparison as both bands style can relate equally well with both the progrock and progmetal fans.

The best way to get my intentions of course is to watch their video of the song Bad Incitements on Youtube. That song really encapsulates the bands overall sound, and I think you might agree that the bands doing prog in Poland are well deserving of much larger audiences, thus far bands like: Riverside, Dreyelands, Disperse, Terminal, Animations, Joseph Magazine, Division By Zero are definitely making the Polish scene much to good to ignore, I might say that Poland's upsurge here of late is making that country one of my favorite hotbeds for progressive music these days.
