I first became aware of the existence of this band after checking the Power of Omens site a couple years back. I seemed that POO were calling it quits, and I wondered what would become of the talented members that comprised that group, particularly drummer Alex Arellano, who exhibited some monstrous chops with POO. I got an email from Alex some time ago, where he mentioned that he was working on some instrumental music with Super String Theory keyboardist Jimmy Pitts. Well this combination of talents had my interest piqued, yet it would be a year or so before I would actually here any positive news as to an official release.
Suffice it to say, that indeed the band forged on, added a bassist - Jerry Twyford, and enlisted the help of a few friends on the guitars, Ron Jarzombek (Spastic Ink, Watchtower, Blotted Science), Marcel Coenen (Ex Lemur Voice, Sun Caged), Aaron Roten (Super String Theory), and some others as listed on the credits info. I was not sure what to expect from this conglomeration of musicians, as my gut feelings were telling me this would be a very metally affair based on the musicians involved. But surprisingly, this music has a technical allure found with many techmetal bands, without the metal, and it has some creative interplay and soloing that would be found in many of the better jazz/rock fusion outfits. Add some avant sound, such as dissonance, odd times, and broken progressions and you can see why defining The Fractured Dimension is a difficult assignment
There are no foot tappers here, each song involves some intricate keyboard arrangements and mesmerizing drum parts, all complimented by the listing of guitars that share their spots on the respective songs. This music can sound very loose at times, with a sense of precision executed chaos, sometimes I wonder what instrument is actually holding things togethers, I am convinced that it is the guitars, with their melodies, leads and rhythm accompaniment.
This cd is a rare combination of forms, a collision of genres that are not interconnected, but to the credits of the musicians performing it, it does work, maybe a bit ambitious for some listeners, as I would have expected, but no question, those that like experimental, technically challenging music, they owe it to themselves to here what this group of musicians has come up with.
Very keyboard forward music, with some interesting uses of keyboard patches, I almost get the feeling I am listening to a hyper video game background music, hinting towards massive alien destruction. But thats just my imagination running a bit there. Anyway, great musicians, interesting style to say the least, should be fun and interesting to hear where they go from here!!
