It appears as though a new sub-genre has been developing in the guitar centered market. The name of that genre is Progressive Instrumental Fusion Rock. Yes that is a long name, and it serves to fit a description for what can be considered some of todays more exciting and listenable instrumental music, particularly with all of the guitar recordings that are being created enmasse.

To explain the genre's name in other terms is to say, the music consists of careful concise arrangements, massive production standards, a lack of simplistic monotony, and keying on more complex themes rather than showcasing the artist that has his/her name on the cover. Joe Nardulli has accomplished this feat by incorporating these very ingredients on his self-titled cd. By taking more risks in creating such ambitious compostions, Nardulli and the few other artists that have delved into this new territory, have allowed guitarists to become more than just showoffs. This music has in effect the same listenability as one would find on many other recordings in the vocal progressive scenes.

Nardulli has great command of his instrument, echoing the soloing skills of of Satch, Vai, Vinnie Moore, etc. The major difference is his approach to delivering his music. There is more attention to the details of chord progressions, and changing time signatures than most of those guys music. My only knock on Nardulli's cd here is that he opts to tackle all the instruments, and uses the dreaded drum programming. Something that is great for working out songs in the studio, but allowing a quality drummer always enhances the music with a touch of emotional personality. A nice cd for this genre, and a great introduction to a musician with some great writing ideas, a definite player to keep an eye on.
