COMMENTS & REVIEWS

It appears that guitarist George Bellas is determined to keep the electric guitar virtuoso scene alive, his last few releases have seen a steady pushing of the envelope and setting new personal standards for not only his performing skills, but an elevated standard in sophistication for compositions as well. This latest release - Planetary Alignment sees Bellas taking his compositional direction into the most progressive standards I have heard him do, while his last project - Palace Terrace offered a nice take on Neo-Classical progressive metal, what he has done with this cd is much more.

The music is written around challenging rhythmic cadences, where radical time signatures abound, nothing straight and predictable about this cd, in fact the only things that come across as expected are t Bellas' superb soloing skills, which take on a new light given the nature of this new highly developed sophistication in composition. Bellas has really made some solid impressions on me with his last few albums, but none nearly as impressive as this one. Given the nature of the ridiculous and mesmerizing time signatures of these songs, Bellas sought after drumming sensation - Marco Minnemann to help bring the complexity and sophistication of the songs to even higher standards. To my ears this cd represents the bright future of modern electric guitar music, proving that there is so much more uncharted musical territory to explore. And George Bellas can be counted as one dedicated musician willing to make the extra effort to make sure the guitar doesn't stay stuck in any one era for too long.

Minnemann is an excellent choice for this cd, not many drummers out there would have the technical proficiency to enhance the complexity of these rhythms with such finesse, let along simply play along to them, this is demanding technical music that requires the utmost dedication and discipline, nothing is predictable or groove oriented on this whole cd. I am reminded of some of Ron Jarzombek's(Spastic Ink) exploits, as well as perhaps some Electrocution 250, but with Bellas flare for more melodic color to counter balance the sheer technical content. It's a brilliant collection of hyper fusion music that employs radical progressive components and first rate musicianship, the kind that makes a statement for the ages.

Well first Palace Terrace, and now Planetary Alignment, it appears that Mr.Bellas is finding a niche in the more progressive culture of guitar music, which allows him to create music with limitless imagination, I may have dismissed George Bellas as another Yngwie follower in years past, but now having enjoyed this cd, it is quite obvious that he has a far more inventive and exploratory musical mind than the everyday shredder.
