COMMENTS & REVIEWS

As the guitarist for the upstart Italian progressive metal newcomers Moonlight Comedy, I expected that Simone Fiorletta would have some really interesting solo material to offer, as I was greatly impressed by his and his bands' work on their last cd - Dorothy released on this same Lion Music label, and also reviewed here at Proggnosis. Moonlight Comedy's music is technically demanding and musically intricate, so I am aware that Simone is not a guitarist that holds back on the creativity side of things.

Simone approaches this solo cd like many guitarists that are involved in 'bands' do, they look for avenues of musical expression that lie outside the lines of what they are doing within their groups. So what I am hearing on this cd are various styles that reflect Simone's musical influences, which are not always of the progressive nature or in the fusion realm either. Yes there are some tunes that show his Moonlight Comedy technical demands, yet more so, this recording reminds me more of what players like Joe Satriani, Vinnie Moore, or Brazilian player Frank Solara are doing with the guitar. Simone doesn't simply play electric tunes for the guilty pleasures of shred and wank, but finds himself into more contemplative territories by mixing both electric and acoustical guitars allowing for the music to breathe between the more intense moments.

So for fans of the guitar, there is a lot to enjoy on this cd, and enough variety to keep you involved with the music, and the idea that there is more than just guitar being pushed in the context of each song makes this more than simply another guitar hero cd. Simone Fiorletta has a nice feel for playing between genres and mixing a variety of genres to get a more interesting outcome, were this just another shred affair, I may have passed on doing a review, but the way the music incorporates different genres and allows other musicians to expose their skills makes this cd an enjoyable one.
