Magni Animi Viri - Heroes Temporis is a unique musical experience that was adapted from two composer/musicians - Giancarlo Trotta and Luca Contegiacomo who both share in the production, keyboards and composing credits. Their vision was to fuse elements of classic opera and symphonic classical music with a modern rock/metal band element, while this concept is not entirely new, they have no doubt created a stellar production on this 2007 release.
Unlike many of the other major rock symphonies, Magni Animi Viri includes a full symphony orchestra and two opera singers, one a dominant male tenor and the other a more rock based female vocalist. Each singer contrasts the other, yet the vocals remain complimentary as part of the conceptual idea behind the lyrical content. One important issue regarding the vocals for the readers here is that the lyrics are being delivered in Italian, which may cause some comprehension issues for those that are not familiar with the language. Yet as is typically the case for progressive music writers, we tend to favor the melodies and musical creativity over any limits language barriers might present, music is a universal language, and good music will always find fans outside language boundaries.
Outside the parameters of the classical aspects of this recording, there is a core group of outstanding musicians that have etched a name in both fusion and progressive circles, guitarist - Marco Sfogli has become a well regarded and respected artist based on his impressive work on the 2006 release of James LaBrie, Elements of Persuasion. On bass and drums is a pair that have done many recordings as a rhythm tandem, Randy Coven and John Macaluso have both been involved with the now defunct progmetal band Ark, as well as being involved with guitarist - Alex Masi, and also some other projects, both are well versed in both fusion and progressive styled music and are great soloists as well as versatile musicians in a studio setting.
This cd comes as a full blown effort at every level, all the details have been covered, from the enlistment of top caliber musicians, to the production standards. A true symphonic rock opera in every sense of the word, hearing the vocals on this are what really sets this apart from the rest of the said 'rock/metal operas out there. The music maintains a very cinematic feel, while retaining a dramatic edge thanks to the emphatic vocal presence. While not overly progressive with the commonly accepted virtues of complexity and sophistication, the beauty of this cd is how the two composers are able to keep the balance of symphonic, operatic, rock and metal music cohesive. This is a very full sounding disc, and one that compels you to listen to it from the beginning to the end, and as a concept story, that is the recommended approach.
