Hypnoise describe themselves as “psychedelic rockers” and I agree. Saint Valentine is their second album and is recorded using 60's and 70's technology only. I think this does give the album a good sound without the harsh elements that technology sometimes gives.
The music has some good use of effects and, for me, is vocals driven with a good guitar backdrop. I hear some Pink Floyd in the music due to the psychedelic elements and sometimes the guitars. The album shifts from a fairly hard rock style to blues to a nice acoustic feel given by Flying Thoughts in a Jungle of Floating Galaxies.
The vocals are a little forced/harsh at times, for example on St. Valentine's Porno Bar but they do fit. The singing is softer on the tracks that are more of a blues style (an example is My Own World). Cheryl Porter provides some stunning vocals.
The tracks that stand out to me are God's Garden and Like a Free Bird. The former has a nice eastern feel to it and I like the guitar. Free Bird also has some nice guitar work and would be my example track for Cheryl's contribution. I prefer Hypnoise when they are laid back and bluesy. However, this should not detract from their other hard-edged side which does fit with the album when it presents itself.
