A.C.T. is back again for the bands 4th official release, and as promised by certain band members at their forum, the music is tapered down and a bit less adventurous that prior efforts. Yet with the promise of shorter and more concise songs, the illusion of not having a single song over 5 minutes is offset by having 20 tracks that clock in at 1:08 minutes worth of music. So with that said, I am going to confess to being an ACT fan, and have enjoyed most every minute of their music from every cd thus far, so, admittedly, I was a bit apprehensive of the band's intent on making changes. And after several spins of Silence, I am happy to say that they are unmistakably the band I have come to enjoy, even with these changes however subtle they may be.

ACT is one of few bands that doesn't have to follow any particular genre regulations, that's what makes them such an alluring musical presence in todays progmusic scene. So while they are mutating a bit here and there, they are simply just magnifying on certain other characteristics of their already curious sound. While earlier cds may have shown more progmetal and pop tendancies, this cd kind of flip flops from that method, with equally good results, yet one thing remains constant for the band, the melodies and lyricism is as addictive and memorable as ever. Not many bands can permanently implant such clever hooks and harmonies into one's brain banks, especially from the progressive scene.

So a question will be, are they still a prog band? Answer, yes, this band is progressive in that they are always writing with such busy musical backdrops, which are often overlooked because of the ease of which the vocals are presented. A sign of a truely well oiled band. Another reason, is drummer - Thomas Lejon, who has quite a synergy with the way ACT writes music, his playing is overtly dynamic, bringing an element of mesmerization, even to the more simplistic progressions. He gets to really play around with the time signatures, and has such a freedom of movement that is rare.

ACT's musicians are very talented, yet play for the purposes of song arrangements, where they are able to expound above and around each song's more basic structures. Again, the band comes through by integrating the sounds of many familiar voices from the prog, pop and rock worlds, and in doing so, are furthur establishing themselves as one of the more intriguing bands coming from the ever prolific musical Sweden.
