COMMENTS & REVIEWS

A year ago Neal Morse put out his first post Spock Beard album, the excellent and highly autobiographical Testimony. Now Neal is back with, in my opinion, an even better CD entittled One.

Listening to One I quickly recognised Neal Morse's unmistakable style, meaning very ambitious and emotional symphonic and progressive rock, influenced by The Beatles and Gentle Giant. Compared to Testimony, One is closer to Spock Beard albums.

For prog lovers highlights will be the two epic tracks, "The Creation" and "The Separated Man", both of them comparable to Morse's better creations of the past, clocking at about 18 minutes (somewhat on the short side for Neal;)) and featuring very distinct sections. The album also contains a couple of touching ballads, "The Man’s Gone" and "Father of Forgiveness" and a few other prog jems all clocking at around 10 minutes. Mike Portnoy is again behind the drums and the music lets him even more show off his great talent than on any previous Morse-Portnoy collaboration.

In a recent interview, after I asked Neal what we could expect from One he laughed and answered : "You can expect it to be really great. It’s a little proggier than Testimony, a little heavier. I think it’s one of the strongest albums I’ve ever done... I think you should expect to love it.".

I could not have put it better. Highly recommended and a candidate for album of the year.
