Little known band from Chile, South America, which at last check was not producing a huge amount of progressive music, yet with this cd, I am sure that Matraz will hopefully get some well deserved attention around the prog community. This was a cd that made an impact on the very first listen, and successive plays have only reinforced my first impressions of this multi-faceted, provocative band. Musically they are one of those bands that seems to touch on many different sub-genres collectively, with an end result that defies them being easily lumped into anyone camp for the broad scope of progressive musics.

It appears that the band has no website, so there is little information about them anywhere on the net. The band features a powerful female vocalist who sings in Spanish, who's name I am not sure of at this point, but suffice it to say that she really delivers her tone beautifully, in such a way that if the language barrier presents a problem , it can be easily overlooked just for the fact that her vocals are that pristine. One other note of interest is the fact that the band plays mostly instrumental music, so the space that she sings in only emcompasses about 1/4 of the bands music overall.

So back to the music, these are top shelf musicians to be sure, each instrument heard on this cd is played by a serious student of his craft. The keyboards are masterfull, showing touches of classical, jazz, symphonic prog, and a few other disciplines, what I am hearing is a virtuoso keyboardist that has all the freedom of expression heard by the very best around, and one that provocatively dabbles in many moods and musical areas. He has a refined sense of accompaniment as well as soloing skill, his contributions to the sound of Matraz are well worth the price of the cd, yet he is not alone, nor is he the king of this show either. The band is also blessed with talent at the guitar, bass and drums, so it's safe to say they are a superband of sorts, yet one that creates music collectively.

What makes the cd so interesting is that the bands can go through many extremes of music through the course of one song, some have a symphonic prog feel to them at first, and later evolve into jazz/rock segments, omly to be followed by some DreamTheater/LTE-ish, heavy moments, another band that they somwhat remind me of is Canada's Hamadryad, simply for the variety of musics they employ and the solid musicianship displayed throughout. It's a full out bag of ear candy any way you slice it. I am ready to say that this cd should rate at the top of most progfans list of must haves, and possibly one of the very best cds I have had the pleasure to hear this year. Now to my dismay, I have read that the band has a debut cd called Tiempo, but seems to be impossible to find, so my quest continues.........
