Once in a while, as a reviewer for ProGGnosis, I get a CD that I have a lot of difficulty to review. This is the case with "Codex Hypnos".
The music on this CD is ambient in style. I am an occasional ambient music listener. I enjoy Eno, Fripp... my favorites being Kit Watkins and David Sylvian. If you also are into that genre, you will notice that I enjoy positive, relaxing and relatively busy (for ambient) music.
The style of Ambient on "Codex Hypnos" is at the other end of the spectrum. It is very slow building, dark, oppressing, disturbing... music. Some of the tracks give me a feeling of an air bombing allert in second World War London (think of the sirens). A few other pieces remind me of the German film Das Boot, the movie taking place in a humid, hot, crowded, coming apart submarine.
Did I enjoy listening to this CD? No! Is it any good? Well the pieces are very well composed and constructed. The intensity buildups are slow but constantly evolving. The moods of the songs are well felt by the listener and there are no wasted segments. The performance is excellent and the production is quite good for a limited budget project. This to me sounds like a pretty good album and clocking at 78 minutes, you get a lot of music to digest.
So, if you are into dark (or even depressing) ambient music, "Codex Hypnos" is an album to check out. There are many MP3 files and streaming music at the SourceCodeX website, so give this stuff a listen. What have you got to lose? Except maybe YOUR SANITY!!!
