This CD was a very nice surprise to me. The music is on the mellow side but always interesting and creative. Stylisticly it cannot be categorised in one specific genre. There is some light Jazz, celtic, pop and prog all mixed together and a few other surprises.
All the tracks are "song based" but there is always something interesting going on with the musicians and the occasional soloing lets them show their stuff once in a while. The music and the production are very "licked". At times I get a Sade feel or even Joni Mitchell in her jazzier period. The poppier side of Hogarth-led Marillion also comes to mind. The songs are all very well written. To me this is the main strenght of this album, this and Maarit Saarenkunnas very beautifull voice. Most of the songs are in finnish and a couple are in english. She sings in english without any accent and her voice reminds me a lot of Beverly Craven (a British pop singer that had a few hits in the nineties). Usually I like artist to sing in their native language even if I don't understand it. But in this case the english singing is so good that perhaps they should consider going in that direction to open up the global market. One drawback, the english lyrics are a bit "mushy" so they should consider using another writer.
In conclusion, "Paperimeri" is a great CD of prog-related pop music and it fits very nicely in my collection of preferred albums. Highly recommended.
